Briefly about Doha Airport Qatar

Doha International Airport is the only commercial airport in Qatar. It is the main base of Qatar Airways. The airport has three mosques, free Wi-Fi, a duty-free area, a few eateries and 42 parking bays for aircraft. There are also 60 check in gates, 5 baggage claim belts and over 1,000 car parking spaces. Sited to the south-east of Doha, the Doha Airport is a small airport that began life as a regional facility. However, a massive multi-million dollar facelift and the expansion of national carrier Qatar Air have put Doha Airport firmly on the international map. Flights operate to around 80 different international destinations and cities, with Qatar Air handling a significant percentage of all flights. Since 1998, the number of passengers and total cargo load has significantly increased. The current capacity stands at 12 million passengers per year. Its 15,000 ft. runway is one of the longest at a civil airport. In the past, the airport was mostly used by Qatari Holiday makers and foreign workers coming for the oil and gas sector. Now the airport is attracting more people such as holiday makers and transit travelers, it is also growing as Qatar Airways is expanding more rapidly. It also has car rental agency, where passengers can choose among numerous different types of vehicles for their trip. The existing airport will be replaced in late 2011 or early 2012 when the first phase of New Doha International Airport is expected to open. In 2007, it was listed as the 95th busiest airport and handled over 14 million passengers. It also had the highest percentage of growth at 22.1%. Till the construction of the new airport the renovation of the existing airport will continue to accommodate the increasing number of passengers. There will also be three star hotels for the convenience of passengers. The new airport on inauguration will make Qatar a regional pioneering aviation centre.
